I explained in my post what the flyover is for - not just for traffic going straight on, but also for traffic to and from the farthest side of the roundabout. Effectively it's a bypass that allows a lot of traffic to miss out half their journey around the junction and thus free up more roadspace.

But this isn't some poky little flyover in France, it's an enormous roundabout with multiple exits and no clear main flow of traffic. This isn't a place where the majority of traffic goes one way or another.
If the flyover really is "stunningly stupid" in your view, perhaps you could suggest a more intelligent alternative plan?
